For many years, Peterhouse has been proud to organise the Vellacott History essay competition and the Kelvin Science essay competition was set up in 1999 to try to duplicate its success. In 2008 we instituted the Thomas Campion English essay competition, kindly funded by the Friends of Peterhouse.
R.A. Butler Politics Prize The R.A. Butler Prize for essays in Politics and International Studies is a competition that can be entered by students in Year 12 or the Lower 6th. Candidates are invited to submit an essay on a topic to be chosen from a list of general questions announced in March each year, and to be submitted in August.

The Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law. This annual essay prize is awarded to a secondary school student who shows an outstanding understanding of, and ability in, law. The Lord Toulson Essay Prize in Law, in honour of the late Lord Roger Toulson, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, is sponsored by Herbert Smith Freehills.
The ISRF and the Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour (JTSB) intend to award a prize of EUR 7,000 for the best essay on a topic within the area of social behaviour and its investigation. THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. Essays selected for the shortlist by the Editors and the ISRF will be judged by a joint ISRF-JTSB academic panel (the ISRF Essay Prize Committee).
The Young Scientists of the Year celebration is an opportunity for Oxfordshire’s secondary schools to nominate their best Year 13 students in Physics, Chemistry and Biology to be acknowledged for their outstanding efforts in science during the past year. The criteria used to select students is left up to each school; it could be based on exam.
